Dental Residency Program
The Fort Benning Advanced Education in General Dentistry 12 Month Program is a world-class quality, fully accredited, postgraduate educational experience, consisting of structured, supervised clinical and didactic training in each of the major specialty areas of dental practice. The vast emphasis of training is in the clinical practice of dentistry. The program’s goal is to discernably enhance the professional capabilities and skills of its graduates in providing comprehensive multidisciplinary oral health care at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in pre-doctoral training. Student resident graduates are far more capable of rendering a comprehensive array of therapeutic services to their assigned patients than that of their untrained counterparts.
The advanced knowledge gained and lessons learned during training prepare the student resident to meet the challenging, postgraduate duties and responsibilities which await them in the Army Dental Care system and the dental profession. Additionally, program graduates are much more knowledgeable of their postgraduate roles of meeting the diverse, oral health care needs of the military communities in which they serve. As an added benefit, graduates learn and better understand their own unique personal and professional strengths and limitations, better enabling them to refer dental care beyond their professional capabilities or scope to the appropriate dental or medical specialist.
Student residents meeting the program’s stringent standards for graduation are awarded the 9D Area of Concentration (AOC) suffix to their primary 63A SSI (Special Skills Identifier).
The AEGD-12 Month program is sponsored and located at the United States Army Dental Activity (DENTAC) at Fort Benning, Georgia. Clinical training may be conducted in each of the activity’s five clinics, with Love Dental Clinic serving as the primary clinic and didactic training site for the AEGD-12 Month Program. Rotations in Oral Surgery, Anesthesia, and Hospital Dentistry are conducted at Martin Army Community Hospital. Student residents receive additional training in oral surgery, acute care, endodontics, and restorative dentistry during potential rotations at Bernheim, Harmony Church, and Salomon Dental Clinics. Laboratory support for the AEGD-12 Month Program is provided by the Love Dental Clinic Laboratory and the Area Dental Laboratory located at Fort Gordon.
The goal of the AEGD-12 Month Program is to provide training beyond the level of pre-doctoral education in oral health care, using applied basic and behavioral sciences. Education in this program is based on the concept that oral health is an integral and interactive part of total health. This program is designed to expand the scope and depth of the graduates’ knowledge and skills to enable them to provide comprehensive oral health care to a wide range of beneficiaries of the Army Health Care System.
