Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology is a full-service laboratory which performs roughly 750,000 clinical tests a year in support of the USAMEDDAC Fort Benning patient population. The laboratory operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day with limited service during non-duty hours.

Our mission is to provide timely, accurate, and cost effective laboratory services and diagnostic information to our health care providers to optimize patient care and military readiness.

Our vision is to emerge as a Laboratory Center of Excellence by incorporating state of the art laboratory diagnistics, achieve technical and quality management excellence, and innovatively adapt to meet the health care and medical readiness needs of the Fort Benning sphere of influence.

Scope of Services


The department offers anatomic services which include surgical pathology and autopsy pathology. All cytology cases, GYN and non-GYN, are shipped to other military treatment facilities for interpretation.

Clinical laboratory services include:

  • Basic (routine) hematology
  • Coagulation
  • Urine analysis
  • Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Serology
  • Transfusion services
  • Outpatient Phlebotomy

Pathology services include the proper identification, collection (where applicable), transportation, storage, processing and examination of clinical specimens with reporting of results. Tests not performed in-house are shipped to a regional military reference laboratory or a civilian reference laboratory. Critical values are reported promptly to the ordering provider and stat tests are reported within 1 hour.

The Department of Pathology provides medical directorship for the laboratories of outlying MEDDAC clinics including Sullivan Memorial Blood Center, Combined Troop Medical Clinic, Harmony Church TMC, Winder TMC, North Columbus Medical Home, 7th Special Forces Group Eglin, Lyster Army Health Clinic Fort Rucker, and Dear Occupational Health Clinic Anniston. The Department provides processing support for the Army Screening and Immunization Program (ASIP) at the 30th AG Reception Station including processing of all immunization titers and shipment of all inprocessing HIV specimens. The Department is also lead for coordination of all Point of Care testing performed within BMACH and the outlying clinics.

Regulatory Information


The Department of Pathology abides by the standards of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and The Joint Commission (TJC) and is fully accreditied by these regulatory agencies. The Department of Pathology also follows guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), MEDCOM, and other agencies as applicable.
